Return to In-Class Learning Update

Dear Carden parents,

Thank you for your patience and trust as we continue through life.  We are all ready to get back to normal.  But we have to be aware of the risks associated with coming back too quickly.
Carden of Tucson school board voted today to hold off returning to in-classroom learning until Tuesday September 8, 2020 and continuing with our on-line learning process.  Although the infection rates are getting better they are still not at a level to return to in-person school.  This decision is based on the benchmarks set forth by the Pima County Health Department on the recommendation of Governor Ducey.
See benchmark link:   Carden of Tucson board will meet on Sept 3, 2020 to confirm the county is hitting the benchmarks and we can start in class on the Sept 8.
While the reopening of Carden for in-person classroom learning appears to be a few weeks out still, the District will begin to provide free learning opportunities and on-site support services for students who need a place to go during the day, as per the Executive Order. These support services begin Monday, August 17 and are intended to serve our more vulnerable students, including those with special education services, and those in care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety, including Foster Care. If you believe your student is in need of these targeted support services, please contact the office.
We will all need to continue being flexible and adaptable to change. Furthermore, we will continue to monitor the data and consult with public health experts in the ongoing evaluation of the information and determination of when it is safe to move on to the more traditional school norms with all students attending.
The health and well-being of our Carden community is always going to be our first priority.  We understand that this is a tough situation for our students, families and staff but we feel that this is best for the health of everyone in the Carden community.  Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you again for your patience and trust.

Mrs. Martinez's Recipe

German Chocolate Cookies

For the cookies:

• 1 1/4 cups (5.6 ounces) all-purpose flour

• 1/3 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter, at cool room temperature

• 3/4 cup lightly packed dark brown sugar

• 1/4 cup granulated sugar

• 1 large egg

• 1 large egg yolk

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

For the topping:

• 1/2 cup evaporated milk

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar

• 1 large egg yolk

• 4 tablespoons (2 ounces) unsalted butter

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 heaping cup sweetened shredded coconut

• 1/2 cup chopped pecans

• 2 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted

For the cookies:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar on medium-high speed until well combined and smooth. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and beat until combined. On low speed gradually add the flour mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula.

Using a medium spring-loaded cookie scoop, drop the dough by 1 1/2 tablespoon rounds onto the prepared baking sheets

Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cookies are set. Let cool on baking sheets for 10 minutes before removing the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

For the topping:

In a small saucepan set over medium heat combine the milk, sugar, egg yolk, and butter. Cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture has thickened, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Let cool until thick enough to spread on top of the cooled cookies.

Drizzle the melted chocolate all over the cookies. Let everything set for at least 15 minutes before serving. Cookies are best served the day they're made.
