Thanksgiving Menu to Ensure a Safe Holiday

The recommendations below will make for a safer celebration this year. Picking even one will increase your safety. The more you choose, the more you will reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

• CELEBRATE OUTSIDE in your yard or at a local park

• MINIMIZE THE NUMBER OF GUESTS, especially those at high risk

• PHYSICALLY DISTANCE WHEN YOU CAN, only touch/hug those in your immediate household

• WEAR MASKS if gathering includes guests from outside your household

• CELEBRATE TOGETHER WITH YOUR QUARANTINE POD, use a tablet and virtual meeting programs to bring family/friends together without exposing one another

• WASH YOUR HANDS before and after preparing, serving and eating food

• USE HAND SANITIZER, get in the gift of giving and provide your guests with their own travel size hand sanitizer

• AVOID SELF-SERVE OR BUFFETS, if sharing food, have one person serve food and use single-use options, like plastic utensils

Mrs. Carns' Corner

22+ years, USAF (Ret)

November… Veteran’s Day, the eleventh day of the eleventh month that ended World War I.  As a military veteran, I am always reminded of the sacrifice and service my fellow veteran brothers and sisters have shown to the people of this country.   Each veteran I have served with did so, knowing the risks of possible loss of life or being separated from their families and loved ones.  During the month of November and every day of the year, we need to think about what our veterans and those who volunteered their time to support our vets have done to support the United States of America. Don’t just say thank you to a vet, thank them by action, such as volunteering at the VA hospital or the VFW.  Visit, talk, send care packages, or write letters with/to bedridden veterans or homebound elderly who may have no family to visit or to take care of them (be creative in the age of COVID).  Actions speak much louder than words…

Also, in November, we celebrate Thanksgiving.  It is not just a time to stuff ourselves with turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing,  and pie, but a time of reflection and thankfulness for the abundance we have as a nation. Our founders created documents that  stated our natural rights given to us by our Creator. We have the Bill of Rights that give us freedom of speech, expressing our views and to be able to practice our religious practices without government interference. We are not a perfect nation, but we have overcome adversity, and challenges. We will continue to do so,  as long as we are willing to work with each other instead of pointing fingers at those we disagree with. We would be better served to understand our differences and use those differences to come up with better ideas and plans to bring people together instead of tearing each other apart.
